past 源自中古英语中由动词 pass（经过、过去）派生的形容词用法；perfect 来自拉丁语 perfectus（完成的、完善的）。语法术语 past perfect 用来表达“在过去之前已完成”，在传统语法里也常对应 pluperfect（过去完成时/愈过去时） 这一称呼（拉丁语 plusquamperfectum，意为“比完成更早/更过去的完成”）。
